Did you know that when you use electricity, it often matters as much as how much electricity you consume?
It’s no surprise that electricity use fluctuates throughout the day based on consumer demand, and electric co-ops must be able to provide enough electricity to meet the energy demands of their members during times of highest energy use, also known as “on-peak hours.” Early-morning hours, when people often start their day, and evening hours, when people return to their homes after work, are common times for on-peak hours. To reduce peak energy demand and save money, many electric co-ops have created a time-of-use rate program to encourage electricity use during off-peak hours––when energy is less expensive to provide. Similar to saving money by attending a matinee, you can keep more money in your wallet simply by using electricity during an off-peak time period.
Using less on-peak power means lower costs for the co-op and, ultimately, stable rates for members.
Electric rates based on time of use offer consumers the ability to lower their electricity costs without reducing the amount of electricity used. By performing some of your daily chores like running the dishwasher or doing laundry during off-peak hours, you can save on your utility bill. In a similar vein, plug electronic equipment, such as computers, printers, TVs and power tools into a power strip, then turn it off during peak hours.
You can also put technology to work for you. If you have a programmable thermostat, adjust the settings so your heating/cooling system syncs up with the off-peak rate periods. Use automatic timers to run hot tubs, pool pumps, water heaters, and other appliances in the same way.
What Is Beat the Peak?
Beat the Peak is a voluntary program where members reduce usage during high-demand periods which is typically 2-8 p.m. on the hottest or coldest days.
When a peak alert is issued, PPEC will notify members by text, email, or social media. Reducing use during these times helps keeps our wholesale power costs down and rates affordable for all members.
Is Time-of-Day Rate Right for You?
Paulding Putnam's Time-of-Day rate rewards members who shift electric use to off-peak hours.
- On-peak hours: 2-8 p.m., Monday-Friday — $0.3080/kWh
- Off-peak hours: All other times, including weekends and holidays — $0.0770/kWh
Electricity costs more during on-peak times. When members use less during those hours, it helps keep power costs and everyone's rates lower.
This rate works best if you're willing to shift usage, such as:
- Running appliances like dishwashers and dryers after 8 p.m.
- Setting timers on water heaters, pool pumps, or tubs
- Pre-cooling your home or cooking meals in advance
To enroll, call our office at 800-686-2357. If the rate doesn't work for you, you can switch back after one year.
Save Automatically with a Radio-Controlled Switch
Paulding Putnam offers free installation of radio-controlled switches (RCS) on central air conditioners and electric water heaters.
- Air conditioners are cycled briefly
- Water heaters are temporarily shut off during peak times
- Most members don't notice a difference in comfort
Incentives:
- $25 one-time bill credit
- $5/month during summer peak months (June-August)
